The American Nightmare

Dear readers,

No this is not a product of my imagination, nor do I wish that this will happen. It is an unhappy blog, I do however post it because I consider the content of the article below important.

I just finished reading “The Coming Collapse” at https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-coming-collapse/  by the famous American journalist Chris Hedges, see below for link to his credentials. I have reblogged it below.

Caveat 1: As a non-American I am not in a position to judge or have critique about the USA Govt or its institutions. So this article below is not my view but that of Chris Hedges.

Caveat 2: Please beware that the present situation and issues in the USA are not only about POTUS Donald Trump. Beware that about half of the US population is still very positive about and sometimes assert their loyalty in an aggressive way if you make critical remarks when in the US. The American population is really split in two non-communicating parts, as for instance prof. Benkler has described in his recent book, see my blog: https://theconnectivist.wordpress.com/2018/10/07/network-propaganda-empirical-study-by-prof-benkler-recent-usa-media-ecosystem/

Anyway, the issues that Hedges describes are not confined to the United States, these problems actualy happening in many countries: The UK, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Poland, Hungary, France. Italy, India, Russia, China and many others. So we better face reality before more weaponized conflicts flare up. Bullets start to fly when people no longer understand each others stories.

So we should work together to face these issues and learn fast to cooperate to survive. I hope to contribute to those constructive processes in these blogpages

The Coming Collapse

The Trump administration did not rise, prima facie, like Venus on a half shell from the sea. Donald Trump is the result of a long process of political, cultural and social decay. He is a product of our failed democracy. The longer we perpetuate the fiction that we live in a functioning democracy, that Trump and the political mutations around him are somehow an aberrant deviation that can be vanquished in the next election, the more we will hurtle toward tyranny. The problem is not Trump. It is a political system, dominated by corporate power and the mandarins of the two major political parties, in which we don’t count. We will wrest back political control by dismantling the corporate state, and this means massive and sustained civil disobedience, like that demonstrated by teachers around the country this year. If we do not stand up we will enter a new dark age.

The Democratic Party, which helped build our system of inverted totalitarianism, is once again held up by many on the left as the savior. Yet the party steadfastly refuses to address the social inequality that led to the election of Trump and the insurgency by Bernie Sanders. It is deaf, dumb and blind to the very real economic suffering that plagues over half the country. It will not fight to pay workers a living wage. It will not defy the pharmaceutical and insurance industries to provide Medicare for all. It will not curb the voracious appetite of the military that is disemboweling the country and promoting the prosecution of futile and costly foreign wars. It will not restore our lost civil liberties, including the right to privacy, freedom from government surveillance, and due process. It will not get corporate and dark money out of politics. It will not demilitarize our police and reform a prison system that has 25 percent of the world’s prisoners although the United States has only 5 percent of the world’s population. It plays to the margins, especially in election seasons, refusing to address substantive political and social problems and instead focusing on narrow cultural issues like gay rights, abortion and gun control in our peculiar species of anti-politics.

This is a doomed tactic, but one that is understandable. The leadership of the party, the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Tom Perez, are creations of corporate America. In an open and democratic political process, one not dominated by party elites and corporate money, these people would not hold political power. They know this. They would rather implode the entire system than give up their positions of privilege. And that, I fear, is what will happen. The idea that the Democratic Party is in any way a bulwark against despotism defies the last three decades of its political activity. It is the guarantor of despotism.

Trump has tapped into the hatred that huge segments of the American public have for a political and economic system that has betrayed them. He may be inept, degenerate, dishonest and a narcissist, but he adeptly ridicules the system they despise. His cruel and demeaning taunts directed at government agencies, laws and the established elites resonate with people for whom these agencies, laws and elites have become hostile forces. And for many who see no shift in the political landscape to alleviate their suffering, Trump’s cruelty and invective are at least cathartic.

Trump, like all despots, has no ethical core. He chooses his allies and appointees based on their personal loyalty and fawning obsequiousness to him. He will sell anyone out. He is corrupt, amassing money for himself—he made $40 million from his Washington, D.C., hotel alone last year—and his corporate allies. He is dismantling government institutions that once provided some regulation and oversight. He is an enemy of the open society. This makes him dangerous. His turbocharged assault on the last vestiges of democratic institutions and norms means there will soon be nothing, even in name, to protect us from corporate totalitarianism.

But the warnings from the architects of our failed democracy against creeping fascism, Madeleine Albright among them, are risible. They show how disconnected the elites have become from the zeitgeist. None of these elites have credibility. They built the edifice of lies, deceit and corporate pillage that made Trump possible. And the more Trump demeans these elites, and the more they cry out like Cassandras, the more he salvages his disastrous presidency and enables the kleptocrats pillaging the country as it swiftly disintegrates.

The press is one of the principal pillars of Trump’s despotism. It chatters endlessly like 18th-century courtiers at the court of Versailles about the foibles of the monarch while the peasants lack bread. It drones on and on and on about empty topics such as Russian meddling and a payoff to a porn actress that have nothing to do with the daily hell that, for many, defines life in America. It refuses to critique or investigate the abuses by corporate power, which has destroyed our democracy and economy and orchestrated the largest transfer of wealth upward in American history. The corporate press is a decayed relic that, in exchange for money and access, committed cultural suicide. And when Trump attacks it over “fake news,” he expresses, once again, the deep hatred of all those the press ignores. The press worships the idol of Mammon as slavishly as Trump does. It loves the reality-show presidency. The press, especially the cable news shows, keeps the lights on and the cameras rolling so viewers will be glued to a 21st-century version of “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” It is good for ratings. It is good for profits. But it accelerates the decline.

All this will soon be compounded by financial collapse. Wall Street banks have been handed $16 trillion in bailouts and other subsidies by the Federal Reserve and Congress at nearly zero percent interest since the 2008 financial collapse. They have used this money, as well as the money saved through the huge tax cuts imposed last year, to buy back their own stock, raising the compensation and bonuses of their managers and thrusting the society deeper into untenable debt peonage. Sheldon Adelson’s casino operations alone got a $670 million tax break under the 2017 legislation. The ratio of CEO to worker pay now averages 339 to 1, with the highest gap approaching 5,000 to 1. This circular use of money to make and hoard money is what Karl Marx called “fictitious capital.” The steady increase in public debt, corporate debt, credit card debt and student loan debt will ultimately lead, as Nomi Prins writes, to “a tipping point—when money coming in to furnish that debt, or available to borrow, simply won’t cover the interest payments. Then debt bubbles will pop, beginning with higher yielding bonds.”

An economy reliant on debt for its growth causes our interest rate to jump to 28 percent when we are late on a credit card payment. It is why our wages are stagnant or have declined in real terms—if we earned a sustainable income we would not have to borrow money to survive. It is why a university education, houses, medical bills and utilities cost so much. The system is designed so we can never free ourselves from debt.

However, the next financial crash, as Prins points out in her book “Collusion: How Central Bankers Rigged the World,” won’t be like the last one. This is because, as she says, “there is no Plan B.” Interest rates can’t go any lower. There has been no growth in the real economy. The next time, there will be no way out. Once the economy crashes and the rage across the country explodes into a firestorm, the political freaks will appear, ones that will make Trump look sagacious and benign.

And so, to quote Vladimir Lenin, what must be done?

We must invest our energy in building parallel, popular institutions to protect ourselves and to pit power against power. These parallel institutions, including unions, community development organizations, local currencies, alternative political parties and food cooperatives, will have to be constructed town by town. The elites in a time of distress will retreat to their gated compounds and leave us to fend for ourselves. Basic services, from garbage collection to public transportation, food distribution and health care, will collapse. Massive unemployment and underemployment, triggering social unrest, will be dealt with not through government job creation but the brutality of militarized police and a complete suspension of civil liberties. Critics of the system, already pushed to the margins, will be silenced and attacked as enemies of the state. The last vestiges of labor unions will be targeted for abolition, a process that will soon be accelerated given the expected ruling in a case before the Supreme Court that will cripple the ability of public-sector unions to represent workers. The dollar will stop being the world’s reserve currency, causing a steep devaluation. Banks will close. Global warming will extract heavier and heavier costs, especially on the coastal populations, farming and the infrastructure, costs that the depleted state will be unable to address. The corporate press, like the ruling elites, will go from burlesque to absurdism, its rhetoric so patently fictitious it will, as in all totalitarian states, be unmoored from reality. The media outlets will all sound as fatuous as Trump. And, to quote W.H. Auden, “the little children will die in the streets.”

As a foreign correspondent I covered collapsed societies, including the former Yugoslavia. It is impossible for any doomed population to grasp how fragile the decayed financial, social and political system is on the eve of implosion. All the harbingers of collapse are visible: crumbling infrastructure; chronic underemployment and unemployment; the indiscriminate use of lethal force by police; political paralysis and stagnation; an economy built on the scaffolding of debt; nihilistic mass shootings in schools, universities, workplaces, malls, concert venues and movie theaters; opioid overdoses that kill some 64,000 people a year; an epidemic of suicides; unsustainable military expansion; gambling as a desperate tool of economic development and government revenue; the capture of power by a tiny, corrupt clique; censorship; the physical diminishing of public institutions ranging from schools and libraries to courts and medical facilities; the incessant bombardment by electronic hallucinations to divert us from the depressing sight that has become America and keep us trapped in illusions. We suffer the usual pathologies of impending death. I would be happy to be wrong. But I have seen this before. I know the warning signs. All I can say is get ready.

This year October 31 at the DevCon IV I gave the first talk on the Smart Property Register — the Mattereum innovation, which I think is going to bring about the next wave of blockchain adoption and will finally enable us to connect smart contracts to the real world. The talk was titled “how to control the material world with smart contracts?” but it’s really about the future of the blockchain: why it’s necessary, why it’s inevitable, and why (in the long run) it wins.

Some of you may remember me from the early days of Ethereum, I came in to manage the project release around late 2014, spent about the year at the Foundation, and I have been pretty quiet for a couple of years, because I was working on a big, unsolved problem. When I was still at the Foundation, I started building outreach to the City of London legal community, because I knew that we were going to need some way of enforcing smart contracts as legal contracts, and the template that I was working from was Ian Grigg’s Ricardian contract model. So this entire talk is basically an update of the Ian Grigg Ricardian contract model, from the perspective of trying to turn that into a generically available technology which we can use over the ecosystem for basically everything where we need to touch what we call fiat assets. So basically I spent a lot of time rolling around with lawyers, and this is what I have learnt.

The first concept is the concept of a fiat asset. We have a nice, clean compartment for crypto assets, we all kind of know how that works, we know that possession of the keys is possession of the asset and all the rest of this. Fiat assets are the assets that are controlled by governments, and a nice way of thinking about it is if the legal status of the asset changes when you cross a border with the asset, it’s a fiat asset. If I take my wallet out and I put it on the street in London, 20 minutes later my wallet is gone; if I take my wallet and I put it out on the street in Saudi Arabia, I come back in two weeks and it’s surrounded by traffic cones. That is an example of a fiat asset, the local government’s regime directly controls how the asset works. The asset is in a sense produced by the governance of the material world that the nation state provides, and this is the world of fiat. Now, fiat is not just fiat currency: it’s houses, because there are national property registers, it’s cars, it’s anything that has regulation attached to it, that’s the fiat world. So the question is how do we control fiat assets with code? Simple enough.

I want to put this in the context of global trade. Right now something like 50% of global trade goes over high-frequency trading systems, which are basically enormous server farms where they measure out the cables to the trading computers basically to the millimetre so that nobody gets an advantage in trade because they’ve got a shorter cable and they could make decisions faster. We’re in an age when nearly all of our really big global systems are directly affected by the speed-of-light delay. GPS works on the speed-of-light delay, HFT is optimised for speed-of-light delay, Google Spanner gives you a seven-millisecond window in which a transaction could have happened, so they just built a little delay in and that’s why things at Google Docs don’t get screwed up when you use them internationally. And we’ve got blockchain which solves the light-speed-delay problem, which prevents us from synchronising the computers, with a batch, a block: 10 minutes for Bitcoin, 15 seconds for Ethereum — that’s there to manage the speed-of-light delay.

So my contention is that global trade is either going to be completely centralised, or you’re going to have to synchronise computers internationally to conduct global trade, and for that it’s either going to be a blockchain or something equivalent. So I’m completely convinced that the synchronisation of the world’s computers for all purposes of global trade is going to wind up on a blockchain or a closely equivalent technology. This is the big game, this is what we’re chasing, and in that process we can either wind up with a better world, because that same system tracks carbon, tracks slavery, tracks environmental pollution, tracks political oppression in the regimes in which these things were produced, or we can have a global system that washes all hands, anonymises all payments, and leaves you with no recordkeeping. So how we implement this transition from paper-based trade to computer-based trade is hugely going to affect the everyday economic reality for the entire planet. This is a fight that is worth us participating in, and it’s a fight that it’s important that we win.

The balance of power that shapes global trade is a complex, adaptive system: it’s a set of multiple competing forces that are struggling for control of society. We are essentially in the people part of that group. We’re not a single enormous global faceless corporation run by one massive shareholder; we are actually an assemblage of the people. So our position in this is that we the people attempt to represent a better future, by implementing a set of technologies that give us access to a better world and that economically outcompete competitors for that role. One way that I talk about this is Star Trek loyalists or cultural loyalists: we’re kind of the science fiction faction that are trying to get to a preferable future, and to get there we have to outcompete the state and the corporations to arrive there. This stuff is all extremely political. We’re not less political than the Bitcoin community, we’re just a little slower to figure out what our values are. But it’s the same game, it’s just we’re going after a much, much wider spectrum of activities than just competing with state-issued currency — it’s a much broader perspective.

So, this is our issue: we are having a horrible problem breaking out into the real world so that we can use smart contracts to control fiat assets. Until we solve this problem, we are not fully empowered. We can’t get hold of the future and shape the future, because as soon as we get outside of the world of smart contracts, outside the world of crypto assets, we’re suddenly powerless, the magic stops working, we hit a threshold and we can’t get past it. What I’m going to tell you is I’ve breached that threshold, but the solution is kind of ugly. [laughter] I know how we get to the real world now, I know how to control it with smart contracts. Some of you are going to hate what I have to say, some of you are going to love it; please, if you find a better way of doing it, let me know, but let’s go.

$50 trillion of assets a year, I’ve already talked about the size of this. It’s worth noting that B2C on credit cards gave us three of the world’s five biggest companies. B2B is conservatively 20 times the size of the entire B2C ecommerce market, it’s a vast pool of transactions, and if we could figure out how to get into that market, it’s a very, very big game. The entire ecommerce game is about $2.5 trillion of transactions a year. There’s a vast space next door which is completely underserved, because credit cards are no good for B2B payments. This is all of the real-world stuff: 200-acre robot ports, tied together by paper contracts and bills of lading. If we can figure out how to get into this game, we become a global economic superpower and our values become amplified; if we can’t get into this game, we remain relatively marginalised in an environment which is increasingly going to be regulated by people who don’t like our values. We have to move into the real world.

The first thing that we need to be able to do is we need to be able to identify real-world assets in a way that’s unique enough to get control over them. We need the equivalent of IP addresses, we need the equivalent of DNS, we need the equivalent of cryptographic hashes. And the world is already filled with assets that have these numbers, and there are lots of numbering schemes to give assets numbers. These numbering schemes are under constant attack: the top one is a bank note, the middle one is a car registration number, the bottom one is a laptop number. All of those kind of structures are constantly under pressure from things like counterfeit goods. but even if you just start the game with these numbers, it puts you at odds with the real world. If you can then make these numbers properly cryptographic and bind them to a chain at point of manufacture you get better in the world, and there are lots of projects working on that for things like drug delivery. So it’s not that the real world is unenumerated and unidentifiable; we can actually get hold of things. The problem is that if we get hold of things without an appropriate binding to some kind of legal entity, you don’t have any ability to control the asset, you can identify it but you can’t control it.

So the first piece of new stuff that we’re building out is a thing called an asset passport, and an asset passport is basically digital identity documents on the self-sovereign model, more or less, for assets, and it’s implemented to handle the kind of squishiness of the real world using a set of staked partners that do things like value the asset, identify the asset, verify the asset doesn’t have more than one owner and these kind of processes. So you have an asset, you take all of the relevant legal facts about the asset, you attach a stake to each one of the legal facts in case the fact is wrong, and then you bundle all of that up into a nice, machine-readable bundle. This asset passporting process is the first step in getting an asset onto the blockchain and under smart contract control. Does this make sense so far? That’s a pretty easy thing to conceive of, there’s no magic there, we haven’t hit the hard part yet.

The second thing is automated custodians, this is where the fun begins. A custodian is a corporation or a trust, it could be something like a bank, and it has the legal requirement of owning an asset as a proxy for some other actor in the system. These things are all over the commercial world, they handle, goodness knows, billions or trillions of transactions a year, there are an unenumerated number of these things, and different jurisdictions handle them in very different ways. So the job of the custodian is to look to the digital world as if it’s a smart contract, and to the analogue world as if it’s a paper contract. So it’s basically the structural equivalent of the Ricardian contract. The Ricardian contract has a digital component which is a smart contract, it has an analogue component which is paper contract, and it relies on an arbitrator to interpret both sides of that in a successful way, and that puts a lot of load on the arbitrators, it’s very hard to find qualified arbitrators. In this model, rather than having that element which has a foot in both worlds, be instantiated as a contract pair~it’s instantiated as a legal institution. One side of the institution looks like a smart contract, you call the contract and it does things, and the other side looks like an analogue institution which has a full set of regulatory licenses.

So this thing is the adaptor between the smart contract world and the legal world, and what works to make that happen is a concept that we take from the crypto world which is staking. These things have extremely strong contracts, insurance, indemnification, regulation, dispute resolution, arbitration, every single mechanism you can use to make sure that the automated custodian does exactly what the smart contract tells it to do is deployed, to give us a nice, clean interface between the fiat world and the crypto world. In this direction, this is a unidirectional interface, you write to the material world by writing to this smart contracts that drive the automated custodian. Now, at this point, what we’ve introduced here is a point of centralisation. So if you imagine a single automated custodian for the entire planet, you can see that that might have some issues, I’ll come back to that a little further in. Does this all make sense so far? Because the legal machinery around building these things is seriously non-trivial. That is a very complex legal object: multiple layers of corporations, complex legal instrumentation, different jurisdictions implement it in different ways… It’s a really, really serious piece of work to build one of these things.

What comes out of that is that assets which have passports and which are embedded inside of a custodian are now what we would term smart property. Smart property is where you take an asset, take an object, you bind it to a set of metadata, which is the asset passporting process, so now the object is for example searchable: you could figure out where it is and who owns it, because you can interrogate the metadata which is on-chain. If the asset chooses to publish a set of essentially API hooks, a set of contract endpoints that you can hook, you could then do things like buy the asset directly on-chain, and as long as the asset is correctly lodged with a custodian, as soon as you put the money into the smart contract you’re now the legal owner of the asset. And that works equally well for a single asset as it works for a house or a portfolio of stocks or anything else, because the legal machinery of the custodians is able to correctly address any legal object. All fiat property has the necessary handles to be embedded in a custodian, and at that point as long as you’ve got the correct smart contracts and the correct legal contracts, you can use the existing machinery of state to get hold of any physical asset and turn it into a blockchain-addressable asset. It’s a ton of legal work, but the engineering is sound and you can actually do this.

What this gives you is a world in which the fiat assets are as easy to access as URLs. You could, in theory, in fact drive one of these automated custodians using standard Web technologies, you could just publish a bunch of APIs, but the problem then is by the time you’ve built the necessary security and identity machinery around those APIs, you might as well have used the blockchain. It builds a very, very different model of how we think about the world. So I’m going to run through that again: you start with a bare piece of fiat property that you cannot address on-chain because it has no identity, there’s nothing to talk to. We attach a set of metadata to that on-chain, that gives us a way of indexing the object, we can talk about the object; we still don’t have control of it, but at least we now know it exists. We take control of it by giving it to an asset custodian, and that custodian is automated to the point where what the smart contracts tell it to do it legally performs or it pays, a very ordinary model inside of the crypto universe, and we bind the asset to the smart contract using the legal authority of the custodians.

At that point, we now have real control of assets. Those assets then form a category of things called smart property, and the smart property assets can do whatever you tell them to do. That is a way of totally unifying the physical and the digital, from the perspective of both the blockchain where you’re writing out into the real world, but also from the perspective of the governments that control so much physical matter. Because these systems look to the real world exactly like the real world. An automated custodian is just a custodian, and there are thousands and thousands and thousands of custodians. So it’s a seamless integration, it’s not that there’s a clunky bridge. What we have is a container, which is a set of legal engineering and smart contract engineering and contract engineering, which takes all of the messy mismatches between the crypto world and the real world and manages them in a completely controlled environment. So it’s not that there’s no complexity there, it’s not that there’s no trickery, it’s not that the real world and the fiat world are the same place; it’s that you build a set of machinery which matches these expectations in a way in which makes the contracts completely coherent across both the fiat and crypto domain.

In software engineering you’ve all seen systems that work that way. In any situation where you have two technologies which are of completely different generations, you wind up having to build a bunch of difficult, complicated interface code; anytime you interface with legacy systems you wind up with legacy system adaptors. So this model, the smart property registers and the asset custodians and the passports, that is the equivalent of the legacy adaptors, which give us direct access to the namespace defined by the nation states. It’s a way of taking all the assets which are currently under nation state governments, making them visible on-chain and moving them around. This is the key, it’s the magic, to enable us to get into the next step of blockchain growth, this is the adoption mechanism; until we can touch the real world, we can’t go anywhere.

The security token model which is currently getting so much play is a very simplified model of doing this. We take a single legal right, which is the ownership of an asset, we figure out how to get that legal right correctly represented on-chain as a security token, and then we use the standard tokenisation machinery to bring these things to market. That takes just a single legal right and automates it in an on-chain way, but all that allows us to do is own things and build portfolios of property. It doesn’t generate any kind of new functions, you can’t use it to start new businesses, it’s just the ownership function.

What we really want to be able to do is something much bigger and more complex. What we want to be able to do is take all of the functions that a thing could have and build machinery around those functions. So if you have something like an apartment, you could buy it, you could sell it, you could rent it, you could auction it, you could rent it on short terms like a an Airbnb model, you could contract out the maintenance on it… There must be 50 different legal rights associated with an apartment. So what you want is to be able to bring that entire suite of legal competences into a smart contract environment where you could get the entire set. What that gives us is what we think of as being smart property. It’s the ability to fully drive the APIs of the real world from blockchain smart contracts. You could sort of imagine the wallet software, where you take something out of your phone, and it gives you an interface that looks like a property screen from an MMO: here’s all the stuff that you own, you take the bicycle, you drag it to your friend’s face and you say, “Lend,” and it just goes off and does the set of transactions that transfers the necessary rights so that the bicycle is your friend’s until he gives it back to you, and that gets rid of all the insurance liability if your bicycle breaks. You take your house, you drag it to “securitise”, it hands you back a wallet full of security tokens, and you can then sell some of those to somebody that you owe some money to.

All of those kinds of models become possible, because we don’t just do a shallow transformation of the physical into the digital where we just do the ownership rights; we want to take all the use rights as well. And you can see that this model completely wraps around the utility token model, because the utility tokens then bind directly into the material world, because those are the tokens that you give people when you want them to use the asset, and the security tokens are the tokens that you give people when you want to own the asset, and ownership and use are two different contractual rights. It took me a long time to learn how to think about law this way, it has been a very hard learning process because I have no legal background at all, I came into this as a nerd, and what I eventually realised was that lawyers are simply the programmers for the real world. And the real world is a nasty, squishy, imprecise place, so the lawyers are basically constantly writing error-handling code… [laughter] [applause] A paper contract is about 90% exception handling and about 10% logic, and that’s just because the real world is really squishy.

So when you actually get to know the lawyers — and, you know, it’s a process [laughter] — what you discover is they’re just programmers that weren’t given computers young enough; you accidentally become a lawyer, and five years later you’re like “Damn, I should have become a programmer!” My Chief Legal Officer Christopher Wray, who figured all of this stuff out, is an extraordinarily nerdy man and only very narrowly avoided becoming a programmer. That’s part of why we have this system working, is because what we’ve built was a culture which was fully tech and fully law, and that was basically two years of conversations around my dining room table, really getting to the point where everybody spoke everybody else’s language well enough to come up with something which was a genuine fusion of code and law. Once you understand that the processes which generate law and the process which generate code are the same kinds of people solving the same kinds of problems, just with a two different eras of technology, we could basically begin to back into law in the same way that we’re backing into legacy systems like SAP. If you’re doing integration with ERP systems, and you put the asset control logic that currently runs capitalism connected to the blockchain, you could do the same thing with law; it’s just a case of getting fully immersed enough, to the point where it begins to look like one thing rather than two, and this is basically the core of what we spent our time doing.

It takes a long time to make these kind of problems soluble, and the next thing that we have to do as a community after this is governments. Because if we could figure out how to cut a deal with the lawyers where becomes a single system, we ought to be able to do the same thing with the state or any other standing institution; it’s just a question of getting deep enough into the understanding of the systems, to understand that we’re all trying to solve the real-world problems in a way that works in the real world. It’s just that as the real world changes you get different generations of solutions, and all these different generations of solutions are kind of running on top of each other, and this is the complex system of society. If we want to interact with that complex system, we have to make deals and form partnerships with these entities, and that involves understanding their logic and understanding their historical period.

Governance protocols. If we take something like a Stradivarius violin, and we very nearly had one with us today but we hit some logistical problems, you need to protect the thing’s value because it’s hundreds of years old, which means you need to be in a position where it’s properly maintained and cared for. If it needs replacement of one of the parts which wears out with play, you need to make sure that it’s done by a proper person. Who is going to decide it’s a proper person? So making the assets such that they’re protected over time, whether it’s rainforests or violins, you need to take a ton of time to design governance structures, so that the owners don’t put short-term interests ahead of long-term interests and damage the assets that they’re custodians of. Because I don’t want us to build systems which basically turn into cutthroat capitalism, where we have leveraged buyouts followed by asset stripping; we want this to be a system where things are put under long-term custodianship and management so that they are cared for for the future. We need that approach both for historical artefacts, we also need it for cultural artefacts, we need it for environmental artefacts. How are we going to do things like correctly tax carbon? Probably there will be a blockchain in there, you want to be able to take the rainforests and put them under real governance structures.

The final thing is centralisation and decentralisation. Building protocols where the automated counterparties, the automated custodians are reliable enough that you can use them on smart contracts and not wind up with a ton of error, where error implies dispute, which puts us back in the Ricardian model where we’ve got to go to arbitrators and all the rest of that stuff, being able to get this stuff correct requires that all of the custodians and all of the other actors in the system are doing things like providing title insurance, all of those actors have to be at an extremely high level of professionalism in the analogue world. The analogue world actors have to be the best possible analogue world actors, and we need to make sure that as we grow these systems out we’ve got the appropriate certification, training and technology packages, to make sure that the analogue world actors are not stealing things out of the custodians and then screwing with the dispute processes by bribery.

If you want to think about doing business in developing world countries, where we really desperately need effective trade infrastructure, there are enormous pools of assets in developing world countries that could be used to stake and secure smart contracts that would enable trade. If you’re selling goods from a factory, if you stake the factory itself on the performance of those goods, it’s much easier to do business with you than if you’ve got nothing but a promise, and that ability to anchor deals against hard assets allows us to work in low-trust environments. Those kind of competences require the entire analogue system to be as good as it can possibly be, or we’re constantly in dispute and disputes are expensive. So our big challenges as we go forward are finding the correct set of partners on the analogue side, to build analogue systems which are fully integrated and compatible with the blockchain reality.

We just published a whitepaper, it explains a lot of the logic, it explains a lot of the legal reasoning, it gives a really good idea of how these systems work. There will be a whitepaper, very likely associated with a fundraising event at some future point. That stuff is not happening yet — if you hear anybody say that it’s happening, it’s not happening — but at some point the intention is that there will be tokenisation of these things, if we could find legal structures that we like for it, that is TBA. I guess that is all I had to say — thank you very much! [applause]

Question: Thank you, Vinay. Do you have any measures in mind to prevent the centralisation of custodians?

V: My expectation is that the custodians will turn into marketplaces, with extremely strong oversight from the community. So in any situation where you think that the custodians are becoming centralised, that creates an opportunity for a second custodian to enter the market, because nobody wants a centralised custodian. So I think what you get is community-enforced antitrust regulation. The other possibility is that we build market machines which punish custodians that get too large by for example taxation, so we could build antimonopoly machinery directly into the underlying contract frameworks.

This is heavy stuff.

Sauron and the black magicians of Mordor will not like it that I write about them. Nor will the 1%ers, MBA profiteers, capitalists and power hungry dicktators who are building up their loyal hierarchies of nationalist Neo-Lib alt-righters.

The clairvoyant Simone Weil wrote down a stunning analysis of the upcoming forces of Facsism in 1933 which seems to reappear right now in 2018. In Hungary, Poland, the USA, UK, and Brazil and many other nations. 

They is now called Authoritarians or Populist Politicians, and she derives their power as coming from the Industrial Age societies which oppress and reduce the lives of its workers to cogs in big machines. Managers of big companies extract wealth, health from the workers and from the ecosystems of nature. Until… they have had enough and rebel. Like the “Yellow Vest” middle class people’s Revolt in France and the “ExtinctionRebellion” in the UK.

Simone also explained that it is not a controversy between Left and Right. Socialism and Unions are also deeply embedded in the Industrial age mindsets of the population and the present SYSTEM.

I am amazed that fascism is on the rise at the very moment it is becoming clear that Capitalism is breaking down and The Market can be seen not to work any more in ALL parts of society. And we can see in front of us captains of industry not doing better than governments. The ruling classes everywhere have failed to govern well, and blamed that on foreigners, those who are different, and blame the poor and the weak. Everybody but themselves.

It is urgent that many of us start to build a new system, one that works and can be democratic: ruled by the people. I believe I found the core of that based on cooperation, wide diversity, synthesis and synergy.: #Synthecracy. A total opposite of Fascism.

Vorig jaar staakten de werknemers van Alstom, een grote Franse treinenbouwer, om zich te verzetten tegen de fusie met Siemens, die in de zomer van dit jaar toch door de aandeelhouders werd goedgekeurd. Meer dan tachtig jaar eerder, op 4 december 1934, trad een van de interessantste denkers van de vorige eeuw in dienst van het bedrijf. Niemand op de fabrieksvloer wist wie Simone Weil was.

Wat zij heeft geschreven over arbeid, bureaucratie en macht is nog altijd relevant. De verhouding tussen de maatschappij en individuele, menselijke lichamen was scheef, vond Weil. Ze dacht voortdurend na over alles wat mensen onderwerpt.

Simone Weil hoefde niet te werken in de fabriek. Ze werd op 3 februari 1909 in Parijs geboren als jongste kind in een rijk, seculier Joods gezin uit de Elzas, dat naar Parijs was verhuisd toen Duitsland de streek annexeerde. Ze was heel begaafd en beheerste klassiek Grieks op haar twaalfde. Op haar tiende noemde ze zichzelf uit verbondenheid met de Russische revolutie bolsjewiek.

Na haar opleiding aan het Lycée Henri IV en de École Normale Supérieure gaf Weil les op school, sloot zich aan bij de arbeidersbeweging en schreef politieke stukken. Later had ze mystieke ervaringen en schreef ze ethische en theologische teksten. Ze werd 34 jaar en overleed in 1943 in Engeland aan tbc.

Bevelen opvolgen

Weil liet een verscheidenheid aan stukken, aantekeningen en fragmenten na, waarvan het meeste postuum is samengevoegd en gepubliceerd. Onlangs verscheen Onderdrukking en vrijheid, een bundeling van Weils politieke en filosofische geschriften. Ook verscheen de vierde druk van Wachten op God, met brieven en teksten die ze schreef aan pater Perrin, haar geestelijk raadsman. Haar werk ademt iets groots en toont een vurige toewijding aan het denken, maar is niet makkelijk te karakteriseren. Weil geeft je altijd net iets anders dan wat je zoekt.

Het werk in de fabriek van Alstom viel Weil zwaar. Ze had moeite met het halen van de productienormen. Aan vriendin Albertine schreef ze dat ze tot haar schrik werkte als een gelaten lastdier, geboren om bevelen op te volgen.

Waarom besloot Weil als ongeschoolde arbeidster te werken? Het denken had haar geen antwoord geboden op de vraag hoe je werk kunt organiseren zonder arbeiders te onderdrukken. Ze vond dat je de onderdrukten niet kon begrijpen als je niet voelde wat zij voelden. In een gesprek dat Simone de Beauvoir, medestudent aan de École Normale Supérieure, beschrijft in haar memoires, verklaarde de tiener Simone Weil al dat niets van belang was dan de revolutie die alle hongerigen van de wereld zou voeden: ‘Ik [De Beauvoir, red.] antwoordde, niet minder dwingend, dat het er niet om ging mensen gelukkig te maken, maar wel om hun bestaan zin te geven. Ze bekeek me van boven tot beneden en beet me toe: ‘Het is je aan te zien dat je nooit honger hebt gehad.’’

Gevangenis

Een jaar voor haar fabriekstijd nam Weil deel aan een mijnwerkersstaking en voerde lange gesprekken met Trotski, die later verzuchtte dat Weil haar geloof in het marxisme had verloren. In Onderdrukking en vrijheid lees je hoe Weil zich schatplichtig wist aan Marx, maar zonder enige achting voor de dogmatiek van het wetenschappelijk socialisme of de communisten – nergens ter wereld bestond een partij die de naam communistisch waardig was. Het Sovjetsysteem kenmerkte ze met het geleende citaat: ‘één partij aan de macht en alle andere in de gevangenis.’

De marxistische analyse schoot te kort. Niet de economie was de sleutel tot het maatschappelijke raadsel, vond Weil, maar de macht. Zolang de machtsstrijd beslist zou worden door het industriële systeem, zouden arbeiders worden uitgebuit.

Het valt op dat ze de gevolgen van machtsuitoefening in kaart bracht met oog voor het emotionele en lichamelijke bestaan van onderdrukten. De heersers waren erop uit om bij hen een gevoel van onmacht in stand te houden. Alles wat hiermee brak, vond Weil subversief.

Arbeiders werden opgeofferd aan de machinerie van bedrijven en daartoe gedwongen door het geweld van de staat, maar deze situatie kon in Weils ogen júist niet door revolutie worden veranderd. Op dit punt brak ze met Marx en haar peers. Hoe zouden arbeiders, ook na een revolutie, iets anders kunnen zijn dan radertjes in de machine en hoe zouden leger, politie en bestuur opeens geen onderdrukkende instanties meer zijn? Ze verwachtte dat het systeem zou voortbestaan tot aan zijn uiterste mogelijkheden.

Haar pessimisme kwam voort uit haar opvattingen over techniek. Door technologische ontwikkelingen was arbeid steeds verder ontmenselijkt. Van die grootindustrie was je niet zomaar af. Met andere woorden: als revolutionairen van de een op de andere dag de fabriek van Alsthom in handen krijgen, zouden ze dan wel weten wat ze ermee moeten doen?

Schandaal

De scheiding tussen hoofd- en handenarbeid had de arbeiders beroofd van de mogelijkheid hun verstand te gebruiken en hen gedegradeerd tot radertjes. Dat was voor Weil schandalig, op economisch, sociaal én spiritueel vlak. Weil was verliefd op het klassieke, contemplatieve leven en stelde zich de vrije arbeider voor als denker, iemand die op een waardige manier op het werk zijn intelligentie kon gebruiken. Arbeiders zouden in haar ogen als individuen in een collectief moeten samenwerken, zonder hun vermogens op te offeren aan een bureaucratisch bestuur.

Een trend in de Franse literatuur: romans over arbeiderskinderen die knokken voor een hogere plek op de sociale ladder. Maar eenmaal daar beland, blijven ze buitenstaanders. Lees ook:‘Bij ons was het: bedrog, scheiding, ontslag of kanker’

Weil beschrijft bureaucratisering als de opkomst van een nieuwe groep mensen binnen het kapitalisme: de technici en specialisten. Deze derde laag, naast arbeiders en kapitalisten, was geïnteresseerd in het bewaken van hun privileges en kennismonopolies.

In deze bureaucratische machinerie, ‘waarvan sommige onderdelen mensen zijn en waarvan het raderwerk bestaat uit voorschriften, rapporten en statistieken’, komen fabriek en samenleving bij elkaar. Rationalisering en specialisering hebben werknemers verantwoordelijk gemaakt voor steeds kleinere onderdelen van een proces dat niemand kan overzien en stapels papierwerk moeten dit proces verantwoorden. Voor ‘kenniswerkers’ is dit niet anders. Elke dag met je hoofd werken is niet hetzelfde als je verstand gebruiken. Weils mens, die zich nietig en onmachtig voelt tegenover het collectief, is niet verdwenen.

De rationele wereld van papier waarin die mens leeft kent eigen nachtmerries. Arbeiders worden in hun dromen bezocht door monsters die Bank en Financierskapitaal heten, schreef Weil, en de burgerij droomt van ‘leiders, agitatoren en demagogen’. Politici denken dat kapitalisten ‘bovennatuurlijke wezens’ zijn met de sleutel tot de oplossing. Weil: ‘In zo’n situatie kan elke leeghoofd als koning beschouwd worden.’

Derde Rijk

Dat klinkt bekend. In het postindustriële kapitalisme geloven politici nog altijd in deze bovennatuurlijke wezens en zijn zich steeds meer gaan gedragen als hun slippendragers, als managers en specialisten. Arbeiders zijn manager van zichzelf geworden, veranderd in de monsters uit hun dromen: ze ‘investeren in zichzelf’ en in hun relaties, organiseren hun productiviteit en spugen het juiste papierwerk uit.

Twee jaar geleden verscheen op de website van de Los Angeles Review of Books het essay The Supermanagerial Reich van Ajay Singh Chaudhary en Raphaële Chappe. Zij beschrijven hoe in het Derde Rijk veel diensten geprivatiseerd werden en een financiële elite opkwam van supermanagers die monopolies en kartels bestuurden. Ze zien een parallel met het heden: de neoliberale economie kent ook een hoge concentratie van macht en kapitaal in de handen van een kleine groep supermanagers. Dit holt de democratie uit. En dan moet je volgens de auteurs niet gek opkijken als er nieuwe vormen van fascisme aan terrein winnen. Als de belangen van een financiële elite belangrijker zijn dan democratie, leg je de rode loper uit voor extreem-rechts, voor leiders die de dodelijke taal van natie, ras en volk spreken.

Begin jaren dertig schreef ook Weil dat de opkomst van totalitaire regimes niemand hoefde te verbazen. De morele sfeer van de bureaucratische machinerie was verstikkend. Het cynisme van het kapitalisme zou worden vervangen door het fanatisme van een nieuwe staatsreligie, een totalitaire samenleving waarin arbeiders hun ellende als ‘vrijwillig aanvaard offer’ zagen. Dit vrijwillige offer omschreef Weil als een mengeling van ‘mystieke toewijding en onbelemmerde bestialiteit.’ Ik denk hierbij aan geweld, maar ook aan de huidige cultus van het werk, waarin werknemers enthousiast en creatief hun offers moeten brengen.

Wachten op God bestaat uit brieven en stukken uit de jaren veertig en bevat prachtige teksten, maar ook passages waarin Weil het Jodendom categorisch in verband brengt met de Christusmoord en geestelijk verval. Dat is haar later terecht zwaar aangerekend.

Spreekt hier een andere Weil? Zoals ze vond dat geen enkele communistische partij die naam waardig was, was het christendom niet katholiek, want niet echt alomvattend. Ze weigerde de doop en schreef aan pater Perrin dat ze het geloof nooit had gezocht. Ze had wel iets anders aan haar hoofd, namelijk de problemen van de wereld.

Verdwenen schoonheid

In die laatste opmerking proef je dat Simone Weil de mystica en theologe niet een totaal andere denker is dan de socialistische Weil. In Wachten op God schrijft ze bijvoorbeeld over aandacht als liefdevolle houding, die zichtbaar maakt wat aan het zicht onttrokken wordt door de willekeur van machtsrelaties. Hier raakt haar latere denken aan haar werk over arbeid en macht.

Die aandacht komt voort uit wachten, uit stilte, een ‘passieve activiteit’, die ze ook aantreft in de Bhagavad Gita, en bij Lao Tse. Deze houding hoort volgens Weil óók bij werk, althans, zoals werk zou moeten zijn, namelijk een betekenisvol deel van het leven: ‘lichamelijke arbeid brengt een bijzonder contact met de schoonheid tot stand, en in de beste ogenblikken een aanraking die nergens inniger is.’

Dit contact met de wereld en haar schoonheid is niet vanzelfsprekend. Wij leven in een droom, schrijft Weil in ‘Liefde tot de schone orde der wereld’. Wie wakker wil worden en ‘de ware stilte’ wil vernemen, moet afstand doen van zijn denkbeeldige centrale plaats in de wereld. Wie zo breekt met zijn ‘valse goddelijkheid’ en zich niet langer het middelpunt van alles waant, ziet in ‘dat alle plaatsen hetzelfde recht bezitten om zo’n middelpunt te zijn.’

Met dit besef kon menselijk handelen voor Weil een vorm van poëzie zijn. Erg wijdverbreid was die poëzie niet. Ze vond dat de witte, westerse wereld dit gevoel voor schoonheid zelfs bijna verloren was en het met wapens, handel en godsdienst ook elders deed verdwijnen. Schoonheid is een doel zonder doelmatigheid, zei Weil met Kant. Iedereen heeft het recht die schoonheid te ervaren. Productie en contemplatie zijn in Weils ideale wereld niet van elkaar gescheiden.

De ideeën van Simone Weil over arbeid, aandacht en het decentreren van de eigen ervaring, zijn een bron van weerstand tegen de mens als middelpunt van een maakbare wereld, waar hij, door onderwerping van mens en dier, tot de laatste snik winst uit wil persen.

• Nightmares about Capitalism

The work of Weil, born in France, lets you feel how The Oppressed feel. Seventy-five years after the deathbed of the philosopher and mystic that work is more relevant than ever.

Last year, the employees of Alstom, a major French train manufacturer, stopped fighting the merger with Siemens, which was nevertheless approved by the shareholders in the summer of this year. More than eighty years earlier, on 4 December 1934, one of the most interesting thinkers of the last century joined the company. No one on the factory floor knew who Simone Weil was.

What she has written about labour, bureaucracy and power is still relevant. Weil felt that the relationship between society and individual, human bodies was skewed. She was constantly thinking about everything that oppresses people.

Simone Weil did not have to work in the factory. She was born in Paris on 3 February 1909, the youngest child in a rich, secular Jewish family from The Alsace, which had moved to Paris when Germany annexed the region. She was very gifted and mastered classical Greek at age twelve. At the age of ten she called herself a Bolshevik to show connection with the Russian revolution.

After her training at the Lycée Henri IV and the École Normale Supérieure, Weil taught at school, joined the workers’ movement and wrote political documents. Later she had mystical experiences and wrote ethical and theological texts. She was 34 years old and died of tuberculosis in England in 1943.

Production Norms

Weil left behind a variety of pieces, notes and fragments, most of which are posthumously merged and published. Recently appeared Oppression and Freedom, a collection of Weil’s political and philosophical writings.

The fourth edition of Waiting for God also appeared, with letters and texts she wrote to Father Perrin, her spiritual counsellor. Her work exudes something great and shows a fervent devotion to thinking, but is not easy to characterize. Weil always gives you something different than what you are looking for.

The work at the Alstom factory was hard for Weil. She had trouble meeting the production standards. She wrote to her friend Albertine that, to her horror, she worked as a resigned beast of burden, born to follow orders.

Why did Weil decide to work as an unskilled worker? Thinking had not provided her with an answer to the question of how to organise work without oppressing workers. She thought you couldn’t understand the oppressed if you didn’t feel what they felt. In a conversation that Simone de Beauvoir, a fellow student at the École Normale Supérieure, describes in her memoirs, teenager Simone Weil already stated that nothing was important but the revolution that would feed all the hungry people of the world: ‘I [De Beauvoir, ed.] answered, no less compellingly, that it was not about making people happy, but about giving meaning to their existence. She looked at me from top to bottom and bit at me: ‘You can see that you have never been hungry’.

Prison

A year before her factory time, Weil took part in a miners’ strike and had long conversations with Trotsky, who later sighed that Weil had lost her belief in Marxism. In Oppression and Freedom you can read how Weil was indebted to Marx, but without any respect for the dogmatics of scientific socialism or the communists – nowhere in the world was there a party worthy of the name communist. The Soviet system she characterised with the borrowed quotation: ‘one party in power and all the others in prison’.

The Marxist analysis fell short. It was not the economy that was the key to the social riddle, Weil thought, but power. As long as the power struggle was decided by the industrial system, workers would be exploited.

It is striking that she mapped the consequences of the exercise of power with an eye for the emotional and physical existence of oppressed people. The rulers were out to maintain a sense of powerlessness in them. Weil found everything that broke away with this: subversive.

Workers were sacrificed to the machinery of companies and forced to do so by the violence of the state, but this situation could not, in Weil’s eyes, be changed by revolution. At this point she broke with Marx and her peers. How could workers, even after a revolution, be anything other than cogs in the machine and how would army, police and government suddenly no longer be oppressive bodies? She expected the system to continue to exist to its limits.

Her pessimism arose from her views on technology. As a result of technological developments, labour was increasingly dehumanised. You weren’t finished with that ‘Big Industry’ just like that. In other words: if revolutionaries get their hands on Alsthom’s factory overnight, would they know what to do with it?

Scandal

The separation between main and manual labour had deprived the workers of the opportunity to use their minds and degraded them to cogs. That was scandalous for Weil, economically, socially and spiritually. Weil fell in love with classical, contemplative life and imagined the free worker as a thinker, someone who could use his intelligence in a dignified way at work. In her view, workers should work together as individuals in a collective, without sacrificing their assets to a bureaucratic administration.

Bureaucratic Machine

Weil describes bureaucratization as the emergence of a new group of people within capitalism: the technicians and specialists. This third layer, alongside workers and capitalists, was interested in guarding their privileges and knowledge monopolies.

In this bureaucratic machinery, ‘some parts of which are human and the wheels of which are made up of regulations, reports and statistics’, factory and society come together. Rationalisation and specialisation have made employees responsible for ever smaller parts of a process that nobody can oversee, and piles of paperwork have to justify this process. This is no different for ‘knowledge workers’. Working with your head every day is not the same as using your mind. Weils human, who feels insignificant and impotent towards the collective, has not disappeared.

The rational world of paper in which that person lives has its own nightmares. Workers are visited in their dreams by monsters called Bank and Financierskapital, Weil wrote, and the bourgeoisie dreams of ‘leaders, agitators and demagogues’. Politicians think capitalists are ‘supernatural beings’ with the key to the solution. Weil: ‘In such a situation every empty head can be considered king.

That sounds familiar. In post-industrial capitalism, politicians still believe in these supernatural beings and have started to behave more and more like their slip carriers, as managers and specialists. Workers have become managers of themselves, transformed into the monsters of their dreams: they ‘invest in themselves’ and in their relationships, organise their productivity and spit out the right paperwork.

Two years ago the Los Angeles Review of Books website published the essay The Supermanagerial Reich by Ajay Singh Chaudhary and Raphaële Chappe. They describe how in the Third Reich many services were privatized and a financial elite emerged from supermanagers who governed monopolies and cartels. They see a parallel with the present: the neoliberal economy also has a high concentration of power and capital in the hands of a small group of supermanagers. This erodes democracy. And then, according to the authors, you shouldn’t be surprised if new forms of fascism gain ground. If the interests of a financial elite are more important than democracy, explain the red carpet to the extreme right, to leaders who speak the deadly language of nation, race and people.

In the early 1930s, Weil also wrote that the rise of totalitarian regimes should not surprise anyone. The moral atmosphere of the bureaucratic machinery was suffocating. The cynicism of capitalism would be replaced by the fanaticism of a new state religion, a totalitarian society in which workers saw their misery as a ‘voluntarily accepted sacrifice’. This voluntary sacrifice described Weil as a mixture of “mystical devotion and unimpeded bestiality. I am thinking here of violence, but also of the current cult of work, in which employees must make their sacrifices enthusiastically and creatively.

Contemplation

Waiting for God consists of letters and pieces from the forties and contains beautiful texts, but also passages in which Weil categorically links Judaism to Christ murder and spiritual decay. That was rightly charged heavily to her later on.

Does another Weil speak here? As they found that no Communist party worthy of the name was, Christianity was not Catholic, because it was not really all-encompassing. She refused baptism and wrote to Father Perrin that she had never sought faith. She did have something else in mind, namely the problems of the world.

In the latter remark you can taste that Simone Weil the mystic and theologian is not a completely different thinker than the disruptive Weil. In Waiting for God, for example, she writes about attention as a loving attitude, which makes visible what is hidden from view by the randomness of power relations. This is where her later thinking about her work on labour and power comes to mind.

That attention comes from waiting, from silence, from a ‘passive activity’, which she also finds in the Bhagavad Gita, and at Lao Tse. According to Weil, this attitude also belongs to work, at least, as work should be, namely a meaningful part of life: ‘physical work creates a special contact with beauty, and in the best moments a touch that is nowhere more intimate’.

This contact with the world and its beauty is not self-evident. We live in a dream, Weil writes in ‘Love for the beautiful order of the world’. Whoever wants to wake up and hear ‘the true silence’ must renounce his imaginary central place in the world. Whoever so breaks with his ‘false divinity’ and no longer thinks himself to be the centre of everything, sees in ‘that all places have the same right to be such a centre’.

With this awareness, human action could be a form of poetry for Weil. This poetry was not very widespread. She found that the white, western world had almost lost this sense of beauty and made it disappear elsewhere with weapons, trade and religion. Beauty is a goal without effectiveness, Weil said with Kant. Everyone has the right to experience that beauty. In Weil’s ideal world, production and contemplation are not separate.

Simone Weil’s ideas about work, attention and the decentration of his own experience are a source of resistance against man as the centre of a manufacturable world, where he, by subjugating man and animal, wants to squeeze out profits to the last sob.

Disruptive Children should be Celebrated and Connected

1. Great TEDx.Amsterdam Talk Nov. 29, 2018

Debbie Reber gave a very impressive and important Ted Talk (see the Video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZcrDVruby4 ) about children who are “different” non average, and are treated like non-performers in schools or are even made dumb with chemicals. Examples all kinds of labels: ADHD, “dreamers”, ‘artistic’,  autistic,  etc etc. Parents panic and try all kinds of treatments. Which do not work and sometimes make the life of children worse. 

Debbie’s point is that we should accept and even welcome te existence of “differently wired children” and see them as very important creative persons which will contribute their thoughts and solutions to a better future of society. Some schools and organizations  have started to see this too and start to approach and support the “disruptives” in a different way than they do their average students / workers. 

Debbie Reber is a parenting activist, New York Times best selling author, and founder of TiLT Parenting. TiLT is a website, top podcast, and global community for parents raising neurologically atypical children. Prior to launching TiLT, she was a teen girl authority and worked in children’s television. After living in Amsterdam for the past five years, Debbie, her husband, and 14-year-old ‘differently wired’ son are returning to the US at the end of this year.

“Treating neurologically atypical children as outliers and kids with disorders in need of fixing doesn’t just hurt these kids—it’s putting the future of society at risk.”

3. What is the best idea worth sharing you came across the past 10 years?

“Alfie Kohn’s work on how prioritising compliance and “good behavior” in kids through praise, rewards, and punishments actually results in less motivated, self-actualised adults, has completely changed the way I parent (and I tell everyone about it).”

4. My comment on her talk

a. there is some overlap with the effort that is under way in many countries to support the “highly ability/ intelligent / talented” children even from young ages. The national support centres for those children and their parents is coordinated by the EU and the famous Prof. Péter Csermely .

b. My second point is the new challenge for this kind of children all over the world,  is to CONNECT these children into #WEAVELETS and get them to COOPERATE to solve specific problems and issues. And to learn together in teams. First of all : they should experience in susch teams is that they are not alone? That there are other Hermiones and other Harry Potters !!

Differently Wired: Deborah Reber tells us how embracing Neurodiversity can be a key to success.

Our first session continues with another very personal story as Deborah Reber steps onto the red dot next, accompanied by an origami Pikachu.

At age 8 her son, Asher, decided to make his origami Pikachu’s in bulk and sell to his schoolmates. What started as an imaginative and entrepreneurial idea got out of hand when others followed the same idea – sparking a price war! In the end, classroom businesses were banned altogether, which Asher thought very unfair. His response was deemed ‘disruptive’.

But “The qualities that make bad disruptors as kids are often the positive qualities we hope to find in our future leaders, and society is going to need their contributions” says Deborah

By thinking about disruptors in a negative light, society does not recognsie – and can stifle – the benefit these individuals can bring at all ages and across different fields. We all know someone, or more likely more than just one person, who is Differently Wired. They move through life in their own unique way. After sharing her story in a podcast, Deborah was inundated with similar stories of parents feeling equally lonely and dealing with a society that sees Differently Wired children as negative disruptors. Based on current diagnoses one in every five people is Differently Wired.

“Diversity ​(is) the key to innovation.. focus on gender and cultural diversity, (but) many skip what I believe will be the ​biggest ​gamechanger — neurodiversity…​companies need differently wired people to be successful in the future”

Things are changing, more and more education models are adapting to value individualism. Companies are slowly adapting; thanks to innovators such as Elon Musk, Steve Jobs and Richard Branson who in themselves are considered distruptors!

But there is still more to do and Deborah leaves us with one final thought:

“How are you going to disrupt the status quo and play a role in this particular revolution? “

Wat de AfD succesvol maakt, is het ‘autoritaire nationale radicalisme’, aldus socioloog Wilhelm Heitmeyer. Dit is vooral problematisch omdat het tot doel heeft instellingen die belangrijk zijn voor de samenleving te destabiliseren.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: U gaat ervan uit, mijnheer Heitmeyer, dat de open samenleving, ja, de liberale democratie, wordt bedreigd door politiek rechts. Dat op zijn beurt weer lokt met autoritaire verleidingen, zegt u. Wat betekent dat precies, “autoritaire verleidingen”?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Welnu, het punt is dat vooral tegen de achtergrond van een mondiaal kapitalisme met een rabiaat financieel systeem, een sociaal desintegratieproces en het uithollen van de democratie, tal van onzekerheden zich in bredere delen van de samenleving hebben verplaatst. En het autoritaire is dan om het verlies aan controle te herstellen door autoritaire maatregelen. En dit is duidelijk aantrekkelijk voor delen van de samenleving – dit moet steeds opnieuw worden benadrukt.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Ja, het autoritaire project dat u zojuist hebt geschetst, met zijn oorzaken, we zullen er toch over moeten praten, er zijn twee kanten aan. Aan de ene kant zijn het de politieke actoren, ook nu in parlementen, maar ook in sociale bewegingen, de intellectuele milieus, die er deel van uitmaken. Dat is één kant. En aan de andere kant is er natuurlijk ook de bevolking, die er uiteraard voor openstaat, omdat zij dit verlies van controle heeft meegemaakt en er onder heeft geleden.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja. Je moet altijd beide zien, aan de ene kant de attitude en patronen die zich hebben ontwikkeld. En daar moet je telkens weer zeggen: dit gebeurt niet zomaar van de ene op de andere dag, maar we hebben een lange geschiedenis. In ons tienjarig onderzoek “Deutsche Zustände” hebben we dit keer op keer gedocumenteerd, hoe deze patronen zich hebben ontwikkeld, en aan de andere kant het autoritaire aanbod sinds 2014 van Pegida en in 2015, na de splitsing, ook de AfD.

 

Steeds weer moet gezegd worden dat dit patroon van autoritaire opvattingen al bestond voor Pegida, voor de deling van de AfD en ook voor de vluchtelingenbeweging. Zoals we al in 2002 vaststelden, had dit potentieel van twintig procent tot dan toe geen politieke plaats, maar voor mij was het een zwervend autoritarisme onder de bevolking, die ofwel bij de CDU, CSU of SPD in termen van electorale politiek verbleef of zich had teruggetrokken in een woedende apathie. Dat is veranderd.

 

Kapitalisme als oorzaak van de rechtse attitudes

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Nu hebt u zojuist de vluchtelingencrisis genoemd. We kijken altijd heel goed naar de manier waarop vluchtelingen als het ware worden behandeld en wat de sociale- en discours-gevolgen zijn. Deze week zijn er twee studies gepubliceerd over rechtse attitudes in de breedste zin van het woord. Een van hen, een groep onderzoekers uit Dresden, heeft de verspreiding van rechts populisme in Europa onderzocht en komt tot de conclusie dat de vluchtelingencrisis echt niet de oorzaak is van de verspreiding van rechts populisme. Dat is een stelling die u ook in uw boek vertegenwoordigt. Zij noemen dit een versnellende factor, de vluchtelingencrisis, voor rechtse opvattingen. Wat moet dat betekenen?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: De attitudepatronen waren al voor de vluchtelingencrisis en de vluchtelingenbeweging aanwezig. Dan worden er culturele patronen aan toegevoegd, maar die raken alleen bestaande patronen. Het geheel kan dus niet eenvoudigweg worden teruggevoerd op de vluchtelingenbeweging, op de vluchtelingencrisis, maar de oorzaken liggen dieper, zodat het dringend noodzakelijk is dat het publieke debat deze patronen serieuzer neemt en zich niet alleen op migratie concentreert.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: U hebt de drie oorzaken al besproken: enerzijds een geglobaliseerd, ongebonden kapitalisme en anderzijds sociale desintegratie. En een politieke leegloop, uitholling van de democratie zou de derde oorzaak zijn die u zojuist hebt genoemd, denk ik. Bij het kapitalisme is het op de een of andere manier voor de hand liggend, omdat het kapitalisme altijd in kritiek is, wordt aangesproken op alles mogelijke. Maar wat is nu de specifieke bijdrage van het kapitalisme aan een autoritair project?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Welnu, allereerst moet je rekening houden met de wisselwerking tussen deze drie factoren. De meer recente ontwikkeling van het mondiale kapitalisme is de inbeslagname van een land. Dit betekent dat steeds meer gebieden van het leven worden overgenomen door dit autoritaire kapitalisme. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de kolonisatie van de gezondheidszorg, het toezicht door het gezondheids-kapitalisme dat ons vermogen om ons eigen leven te bepalen, heeft overruled. Het autoritair kapitalisme heeft zijn stelregel kunnen handhaven en heeft in de afgelopen twintig of dertig jaar een enorme toename van de controle gecreëerd, terwijl aan de andere kant de natiestaatpolitiek een enorm verlies van controle heeft gedoogd, hetgeen vervolgens ook te maken heeft met die desintegratieprocessen. En het politieke apparaat van onze democratie werkt als een klok, zo u wilt. Tegelijkertijd gaat het vertrouwen van grote delen van de bevolking verloren. Dat is wat ik bedoel met leegloop, uitholling van democratie.

 

Dit resulteert in verschillend verlies van controle op het individuele leven van mensen. Er is dus een achtergrondconcept dat niet zomaar op korte termijn kan worden geëlimineerd, omdat de structurele omstandigheden die er zijn, vervolgens door de mensen worden verwerkt, en bovenal, weer in een stroomversnelling worden gebracht door de verschillende crises die we sinds ongeveer 2000 hebben meegemaakt, zoals 9/11. Ik denk dat dit het startschot was voor dergelijke crises.

 

En crises, het moet steeds weer gezegd worden, worden gekenmerkt door het feit dat economische, sociale en politieke routines worden opgeschort. En het tweede criterium is: de situatie vóór deze crises kan niet worden hersteld. Dit verwijst naar 9/11 met een religieus-politieke crisis. Dit verwijst naar 2005 met de Hartz 4-wetten, opnieuw voor delen van de bevolking echt een sociale crisis. En dan, in 2008/9, de financiële en bancaire crisis, d.w.z. een economische kant, die een impact heeft op zowel de politiek als op sociale zaken, en vanaf 2015 bijvoorbeeld de vluchtelingencrisis, d.w.z. cultureel politiek.

 

Doorslaggevend is nu dat vooral na 2008, en dat kunnen we duidelijk laten zien aan de hand van ons lange termijn onderzoek, het aantal mensen die al dachten als rechtspopulisten, een stijgende curve hebben ontwikkeld, radicalisering met betrekking tot hun eigen gebrek aan invloed, bereidheid om deel te nemen aan demonstraties en individuele bereidheid tot het gebruik van geweld.

 

Dit betekent dat zelfs daar de verbanden tussen maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en houdingspatronen, attitudes in de verwerking van crises, kunnen worden herkend. En voor sommige van deze mensen werd dit weerspiegeld in een geradicalisereerde houding.

 

Groeiend rechtse attitudes

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Maar, mijnheer Heitmeyer, laten we tussendoor een zeer korte vraag stellen: de economische basisparameters – een daling van de werkloosheid, het omgaan met de financiële crisis, groeiprocessen – bieden eigenlijk geen enkele reden voor mensen om hun houding nu radicaal te veranderen. Het bedreigingsscenario is eigenlijk veel kleiner dan je zou denken.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Enerzijds blijkt dat inderdaad uit de huidige arbeidsmarktgegevens. Het andere ding is, het werkt alleen op statistieken. En de werkomstandigheden, de veiligheid van de werkomstandigheden en bepaalde toekomstige parameters die zich aandienen, zoals de digitalisering, zijn veel diepgaander. Het is een kwestie van status- en erkenning en de beoordeling van beroepskwalificaties. Deze toekomstige dimensies zijn veel ernstiger. En dan die kwestie van het overwinnen van de financiële crisis, maar dat bedoel je waarschijnlijk niet serieus, want al het bewijsmateriaal suggereert dat er daar nieuwe turbulentie zal zijn. En het cruciale punt is dat de controle-instrumenten voor het beheer ervan vandaag de dag al opgebruikt zijn wanneer u denkt aan het rentebeleid van de Europese Centrale Bank en dergelijke. Nu, er is een diep gevoel van onveiligheid. Statistieken helpen niet. Statistieken zijn geen manier om de gevoelens van mensen over hun verwachtingen voor de toekomst te compenseren.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: In uw boek vond ik het deel waarin u ook empirische studies heeft uitgevoerd waarin u de “leegloop van de democratie”, een combinatie van verschillende attitudes, d.w.z. enerzijds minachting voor de democratie, anderzijds verwaarlozing van de democratie en radicale twijfels over democratie zelf, als een verontrustend deel beschrijft.

 

Je schrijft bijvoorbeeld op een gegeven moment, om slechts één voorbeeld te geven: “Bijna een kwart van de respondenten vond dat politici zich vooral met hun eigen belangen bezighielden. En meer dan tachtig procent gelooft dat politici meer rechten opeisen dan gewone burgers”. – Op een bepaalde manier staat men er verbijsterd bij, omdat er zich daar iets manifesteert zelfs in het rechtse milieu: politici staan boven, en wij daar beneden.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja. Natuurlijk is autoritair nationaal radicalisme, zoals ik de hele ontwikkeling in dit subsegment noem, daaraan gekoppeld en speelt dan het verschil tussen het volk en de elite, hoewel de actoren die dit claimen nu zelf deel uitmaken van de elite. Maar dat is een andere zaak.

 

Er is inderdaad sprake van een verlies aan vertrouwen. En dat is wat ik bedoel met het verlies van controle en handhaving in de natiestaatpolitiek; over een autoritair kapitalisme dat zijn stelregel rigoureus kan afdwingen. Dat moet je steeds weer zeggen. Een dergelijk financieel kapitalisme heeft absoluut geen belang bij sociale integratie, maar gaat alleen over concurrentie en uitbuiting. Dan worden ook groepen beoordeeld in de zin van ongelijkheid, nut, bruikbaarheid en efficiëntie. Dit dringt echt door in de maatschappij en in de gedragspatronen van individuen en groepen.

 

De term rechts populisme gebagatelliseerd

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Mr. Heitmeyer, ik heb zojuist gesproken over twee studies die deze week zijn gepubliceerd. Een tweede studie komt van de onderzoeksgroep van Leipzig. Zij heeft zojuist onderzoek gedaan naar extreemrechtse opvattingen en komt tot de conclusie dat de drempel om in te stemmen met extreemrechtse uitingen op dit moment erg laag is. Bijna een op de drie is voorstander van xenophobe standpunten. Zijn dit alarmerende gebeurtenissen, of heeft u er al op geanticipeerd?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Natuurlijk hangt het veel af van hoe je de termen of de verschijningsvormen definieert. In onze tienjarige studie over het onderwerp “groeps gerelateerde misantropie” konden we deze ontwikkeling laten zien, inclusief de rechtse populistische opvattingen, die we in 2002 al op 20 procent hadden gemeten.

 

Alleen op politiek niveau is er geen enkele resonantie geweest, maar de resonantie en nervositeit komen pas naar voren nu de mandaten zijn vervuld. Het cruciale punt dat ik noemde is dat we precies moeten zijn over de definities. Ik beschouw wat er op dit moment gebeurt niet als een rechtse populistische ontwikkeling. Dit is veel te triviaal. De term rechtspopulisme is ook uiterst vaag en leidt tot willekeur in alle uitingen die niet zo goed passen.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: U heeft hier uw eigen term bedacht, namelijk “autoritair nationaal radicalisme” als alternatief voor dit alomtegenwoordige concept van rechtspopulisme en ook als alternatief voor een sterkere definitie van rechts-extremisme.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja. Je moet het nieuwe succes van de AfD naar rechts uitleggen. Dit spoor van succes kan noch door rechts populisme, noch door rechts-extremisme worden verklaard. Op veel plaatsen opereert rechts-extremisme met latent geweld of met dreiging van geweld enz. Dat is een definitie. En rechts populisme is willekeurig.

 

Wat ik als centraal beschouw is juist dit autoritaire nationale radicalisme. Het werkt met een paradigma van controle, d.w.z. rigide leiderschap, hiërarchische sociale orde, strijd en een vriendschap -vijand schema. Dat is het ene element.

 

De staatsburger wordt gedefinieerd door een aanspraak op de superioriteit van het Duitse volk. Het Duits zijn wordt verheven tot anker van identiteit en gaat tegelijkertijd gepaard met een retoriek van verlies en verval. En een nieuwe Duitse interpretatie van het verleden moet in gang worden gezet. Het radicale is dat men al spreekt over een systeemverandering. Dit is ook een probleem omdat het rechtse populisme door vlakke ideologie de publieke aandacht via de massamedia nastreeft om irritatie en vervreemding op gang te brengen.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Altijd anti-establishment.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja. En rechts-extremisme, met name het neonazisme, berust op terreur tegen zwakke groepen in de publieke sfeer. Maar autoritair nationaal radicalisme richt zich op de instellingen van deze samenleving. Dit is vooral problematisch bij destabilisatie. Dat is mijns inziens een centraal motief om bijvoorbeeld in parlementen te zeggen: “Wij jagen ze op ” of, wanneer wij dan vervolgens invloed uitoefenen op die instellingen die belangrijk zijn voor de samenleving. Instellingen houden deze samenleving immers bij elkaar en zouden nu niet gedestabiliseerd moeten worden door gedoe en retoriek.

 

Maar daar wordt veel te weinig rekening mee gehouden. Men wordt enthousiast over de uitspraken, terwijl er tegelijkertijd verschuivingen zijn in de normalisering van het publieke taalgebruik. Als je rekening houdt met deze concepten, zoals ‘om-volken’ of je verlegt de grenzen van wat er gezegd kan worden, dan zijn dit eigenlijk de centrale punten waarop je je zou moeten concentreren.

 

Zal de rechtse agenda normaal zijn?

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Deze normalisatie, zoals u al zei, heeft natuurlijk juist tot doel de grenzen van zeggingskracht te verleggen . Men schrijft “rechtse populistische beweging” maar het autoritair nationaal radicale AfD werkt voortdurend aan het verleggen van de grenzen van de normaliteit. Het publiek volgt toch bereidwillig? Of wat gebeurt daar eigenlijk?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Bereidwillig natuurlijk niet. Het publiek bestaat niet. Dat is een deel van ons probleem. We hebben immers geen breed publiek meer waarin er een debat is, maar we moeten het hebben over publieke sferen, dat wil zeggen in het meervoud. De sociale netwerken spelen hier een nare rol, omdat er daar gehomogeniseerde groepen zijn die elkaar opbouwen zonder kritiek of openlijke tegenstrijdigheden in het debat.

 

Nou ok, dat geeft veel connotaties, zonder dat het brede publiek, bereid is te volgen. Maar ja, op veel plaatsen, in de filterbubble is men onder zichzelf en bevestigt men zich sterk, onder elkaar.

 

Wat mij vooral zorgen baart, zijn de samenzweringstheorieën die de samenleving infiltreren en met grote heftigheid worden verspreid. Dat is een normalisatie, zonder dat er een kans bestaat om concepten te bekritiseren of door te kunnen dringen tot een ander. Dat is wat belangrijk is.

 

Dit betekent dat onderwerpen die tot nu toe buiten het discussiekader van een samenleving vielen, plotseling worden opgepakt en er achtereenvolgens in worden opgenomen. Vooral sommige intellectuelen spelen een roemloze rol in de transmissie hiervan.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: U verwijst bijvoorbeeld naar Peter Sloterdijk.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Bijvoorbeeld, of ook de heer Sarrazin en enkele anderen. Dit zijn dingen waar de grenzen van wat kan worden gezegd worden opgerekt. En de heer Gauland heeft dit nu overduidelijk gemaakt als de centrale functie van de AfD.

 

De weigering van Margarete Stokowski om een lezing te houden

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Maar is het publiek hier inmiddels niet erg gevoelig voor geworden? Ik zal je maar één voorbeeld geven, want deze week waren we daar duidelijk mee bezig in het programma:

 

Een jonge auteur, Margarete Stokowski, annuleert een lezing in een boekhandel in München, een links-liberale boekhandel in München, omdat ze plotseling een boekenkast hebben opgezet waarin literatuur kan worden gevonden met “Nieuwe Rechten, Oud Denken”, inclusief primaire teksten van de Antaios uitgeverij, enz. Hierover is een groot debat ontstaan, ook op sociale media, omdat de auteur heeft gezegd dat dit een persoonlijke politieke stap is, omdat zij juist, en dan komt het woord ‘normalisering’ in het spel, niet wil deelnemen, rechtse literatuur op de een of andere manier te classificeren in het politieke discours, terwijl er nu plotseling toch een eigen ruimte voor wordt gecreëerd.

 

Ik voel een duidelijke overgevoeligheid.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Nou, ik denk dat de beslissing van de auteur verkeerd is.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Ik houd ze voor correct.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Omdat deze discoursruimte al lang bestaat. Je kunt het niet inperken met een bepaalde moraal. Het patroon is: hoe hoger het moreel, hoe kleiner de kans op communicatie. Ik denk dat de boekhandelaar gelijk heeft als hij zegt: “We moeten weten wat ze denken”.

 

Dichotomie in wereldbeeld is buitengewoon aantrekkelijk

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Maar dat staat buiten kijf. Dat was helemaal niet het punt, maar wat hier gecanoniseerd en gesegmenteerd is, hoort eigenlijk thuis in het algemene publieke debat.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Nee hoor. Een boekhandel is ook een openbare ruimte. Daar kun je bladeren, je kunt kijken, wat zijn de denkpatronen en met welke wereldbeelden wordt er eigenlijk gewerkt? Hoe effectief zijn deze wereldbeelden?

 

Ik beschrijf dit als een tweeslachtig wereldbeeld, namelijk dat de complexe werkelijkheid tot zeer scherpe, wederzijds begrenzende termen wordt teruggebracht. Politiek gaat over het volk versus de elite. Macht gaat over superioriteit en inferioriteit. De waarde structuur gaat over antipluralisme versus diversiteit. Of geschiedenis gaat over transfiguratie versus verlichting. Collectieve identiteit gaat over Duits zijn versus internationaliteit.

 

Deze tweeledige wereldbeelden zijn op veel plaatsen ook voor delen van de bevolking buitengewoon aantrekkelijk, omdat ze zouden verhelderen in een verwarrende, een ambivalente moderne wereld, die zeer tegenstrijdige elementen bevat en zeer doordrongen is van onduidelijke, onbesliste situaties. Dan raken deze tweeledige wereldbeelden een snaar. Dit is aantrekkelijk voor de mensen in de bevolking die al in zo’n stemming zijn. En het gevaarlijke is dat deze tweeledige wereldbeelden geschikt zijn voor dissonante wellis-nietes conflicten in de samenleving.

 

Normaal gesproken spreken we over “min of meer” conflicten, d.w.z. dat er een basis is voor onderhandelingen. Nee, deze tweeledige wereldbeelden zijn getrimd voor wellis – nietes conflicten. Dat maakt het gevaarlijk. Omdat we hebben te maken hebben met meerdere podia.

 

Het eerste podium is helder verlicht in de Bundestag. De tweede is het intellectuele milieu dat het gedachtengoed levert. En als we de gedachten niet kennen, komen we voor verrassingen te staan.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Ja, dat is helemaal niet mijn punt. Ik bedoel – nu even los daarvan: Natuurlijk moeten we onszelf confronteren. Natuurlijk moeten we deze boeken lezen. Natuurlijk hebben we met elkaar te maken. Alleen krijg ik soms de indruk dat het afkloppen van argumenten iets is waar men toch al op kan anticiperen en, dat er aan de ene kant noch aan de andere kant een echte bereidheid is om overtuigd te worden.

 

Hoe kom je uit zo’n dilemma als publiek? Als men zegt dat dit autoritaire nationale radicalisme, dat niemand van ons, het maatschappelijk middenveld, echt kan willen omdat het een bedreiging vormt voor het fundament van de liberale democratie, dan moeten er mogelijkheden zijn voor debat en overtuiging. Maar dat lijkt er niet te zijn. Het lijkt meer een strijd om zoveel mogelijk mensen achter elkaar te verzamelen – met steeds dezelfde argumenten.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja, dat zou ik helemaal niet tegenspreken. Alleen de vraag is: waar is zo’n forum? Ik had al eerder gezegd dat het publiek niet meer bestaat, maar publieke sferen. En de vraag is: hoe bereik je zelfs deze gesloten filterbubbles, en dat is het punt, verzegeld dichte filterbubbles, homogene groepen? En homogene groepen zijn altijd gevaarlijk. – Hoe kan men überhaupt iets bereiken, vooral omdat alle strategieën zijn ontworpen om een emotionalisering van sociale problemen te projecteren als een verlies van controle?

 

Emotionele verhitting in plaats van rationele argumenten

 

Dit is een van de meest effectieve items op de populistische agenda, namelijk processen van sociale desintegratie, zoals het verlies van status voor de toekomst, en vervolgens de kwestie van culturele vervreemding, die tegelijkertijd een verlangen naar homogeniteit van de samenleving met zich meebrengt. En alle historische interpretaties die nu worden uitgeprobeerd, lopen hierop uit: Emotionaliteit.

 

Omgaan met deze emotionaliteit is voor ons allemaal erg moeilijk. We zijn allemaal nogal getraind in argumenten, rationele overwegingen. Maar dat is voorbij. En daar krijgen we aanzienlijke problemen mee als we deze dingen niet onder ogen zien. Daar kun je je verschillende forums bij voorstellen.

 

Deutschlandfunk Kultur: Zoals ik uit uw boek heb geleerd, hebben we nu ook te maken met een nieuw soort autoritair, namelijk het zelfbewuste autoritaire, dat wil zeggen, niet iemand die als het ware onder gezag staat, maar iemand die controle wil uitoefenen en dat ook laat zien. Dit blijkt duidelijk uit de openbare debatten.

 

Als het maatschappelijk middenveld nog steeds geen middelen tot zijn beschikking heeft om emotioneel in deze debatten in te grijpen, is dan het idee van autoritair nationaal radicalisme een model voor succes in de toekomst?

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Ja, dat hangt natuurlijk af van hoe het officiële beleid en vooral het maatschappelijk middenveld reageert. In Duitsland hebben we in grote delen een zeer alerte, attente burgermaatschappij. Daar moeten we het mee doen. Dit zou dan verder moeten worden uitgebreid. Behalve dat ik er een vraagteken bij zet in het boek. Dat hoeft niet per se zo te zijn. Men moet echter gewoon zien dat de structurele problemen die ik heb aangegeven, het financieel kapitalisme met de gevolgen en het verlies van controle over de natiestaatpolitiek, bepaalde sociale desintegratieprocessen zoals culturele conflicten en ook sociaal-geografische ontwikkelingen, structurele elementen zijn die op dit moment helemaal niet worden aangepakt. Dat is het punt.

 

Wat staat bij autoritair nationaal radicalisme hoog op de agenda: De vluchtelingenbeweging. Dat is de Duitse identiteit. Duits zijn krijgt dan de functie van een stabiliserend anker dat controle krijgt. Dan is er natuurlijk nog de kwestie van de criminaliteit en de islamitische terreur, die de drijvende populistische krachten zijn. Dat staat op de agenda in plaats van de structurele problemen.

 

Er is nog iets anders: we hebben te maken met een “verduistering”, zoals ik het noem, in Europa. Als je naar de kaart kijkt, zie je dat de instellingen in sommige landen al worden geherstructureerd.

 

Deutschlandfunk Cultuur: Polen.

 

Wilhelm Heitmeyer: Of Hongarije. Daar ben ik sceptisch over. Als je de structurele problemen niet onder controle krijgt, dat moet je blijven zeggen,  dan verliezen mensen het vertrouwen en gaan op zoek naar autoritaire structuren die meer veiligheid beloven.

 

Maar die belofte van veiligheid kan niet waargemaakt worden. Ook dat is een belangrijk punt. Het feit dat deze beloften worden gedaan, het herstel van de controle, dat wil zeggen de slogan, we nemen ons land terug, gaat hand in hand met sterkere angsten en dus het verlies van vertrouwen en maakt de zaak op veel plaatsen alleen maar problematischer.

 

Het is dus van groot belang dat het maatschappelijk middenveld in alle delen van het land zich als het ware publiekelijk uitspreekt. Elke samenleving moet voortdurend haar normen en de normen van menselijke gelijkheid, mentale en fysieke integriteit, die de basiswaarden zijn van deze samenleving, opnieuw bevestigen.

 

Grote politiek begint op kleine schaal

 

Dat geldt natuurlijk ook voor de grote demonstraties zoals die welke onlangs in Berlijn werd gehouden. Maar ook in de familiekring, in de vriendenkring, in de sportclub, in de parochie, de kerk. Kan ik daar mijn stem verheffen tegen populistische uitspraken, tegen devaluatie van bepaalde groepen? De sociale kosten zijn dat ik familieleden of vrienden kan verliezen. Tegenspraak en protest moet je leren. Een harde leerschool.
