The “Parti Pirate” of Tunesia has been declared legal by the interim President, after more than 12 years of underground acivism. This party of bloggers and other online activist aim to get guarantees for freedom of expression in all media, including the digital social media and a stop to internet censorship. It is the first such party in the Arab world and all of Africa who do no longer have to work underground out of fear for the security services.
The problem was that after the Jasmine revolution in Tunesia the agents of the security services of former dictator Ben Ali kept going on arresting activists and censoring unwelcome information, using the ‘Ammar 404’ control system.
PPT leader Slehediine Kchouk has announced that the party will take part in the elections for parliament in October and must get their place in the democratic decisionmaking processes of Tunis.
